†a. A gold coin, spec. one of various obsolete gold coins of Germany and the Netherlands (obs.).
b. The name was subsequently transferred to a silver coin, the value of which differed in various countries and at various periods; it survives in Holland (= guilder).
In recent use the plural is commonly gulden as in Ger.
