Any of the colourless, reduced derivatives of porphyrins in which the four pyrrole nuclei are linked by methylene groups, {b1}CH2{b1}.
In quot. 1913 applied spec. to the first such compound to be prepared.
1913Jrnl. Chem. Soc. CIV. i. 409 A colourless, crystalline reduction product, C33H42O4N4, of high molecular weight is obtained. This is termed porphyrinogen in view of its ready conversion into a red product having the spectroscopic properties of porphyrin. 1938Chem. Soc. Ann. Rep.
