Babbit-metal
Also babbitt (or Babbitt) metal, Babbit's metal.
[f. name of the inventor.]
A soft alloy of tin, antimony, and copper, used in journal-bearings, etc., to diminish friction. Sometimes used ellipt. Hence babbitt-lined adj.
Named after Isaac Babbitt (1799–1862).
1875Ure Dict. Arts, Babbit's Metal..composed of 25 parts of tin, 2 parts of antimony, and ½ a part of copper. 1900Sci. Amer. Suppl. XLIX. 20184/1 Almost any solid metal for lining bearings is called by the name of ‘babbitt metal’... Ordinary soft lining, so-called babbitt metal, frequently is made up of four parts lead and one part antimony.
