bacteriorhodopsin, n. Biochem.|bækˌtɪərɪəʊrəʊˈdɒpsɪn| [f. *bacterio- + rhodopsin n.] A protein present in the purple membrane of some strains of the bacterium Halobacterium halobium, which when illuminated mediates the transport of protons across the membrane in large numbers.
