Affix. Prefixed to nouns (freq. forming nonce-words) to denote things which are British in origin; British-made, British-based. In later use: spec. designating music, art, design, etc., created by (young) British people and perceived as fashionable, innovative, or influential, esp. on account of international attention or success, as Britart, Britfilm, Britlit, etc.
The popularity of the term Britpop in the early to mid 1990s triggered widespread use of the combining form; see Britpop n.
