Any of a class of stable compounds of carbon, fluorine, and chlorine, analogous to the hydrocarbons, which are used as refrigerants and aerosol propellants and in the plastics industry. Abbrev. CFC (see *C III. 3).
The presence of chlorofluorocarbons in the atmosphere is thought to cause damage to the ozone layer.
