[Apparently an alteration of closed-caption v., after either close v. or close adj.: the article cited in quot. 1979 below elsewhere uses closed-caption v. (compare quot. 1979 at that entry).
Continued use is probably due to dropping (or not hearing) the medial d in speech, and also perhaps a tendency to normalize both inflections when inferring a verb from closed-captioned adj. (the majority of evidence is for the uninflected form close-caption).Usage is now fairly widespread and independent of the original relationship with closed-caption v., which may in some cases give rise to the pronunciation Brit. |ˌkləʊs ˈkapʃn|, U.S. |ˌkloʊs ˈkæpʃ(ə)n|, after the standard pronunciation of close adj. However, the analogous forms with closed are generally preferred to this and its derivatives.]
