A combining element expressing the presence in a compound of two atoms of oxygen; spec. the presence in an organic compound of two equivalents of the monad radical hydroxyl (OH) taking the place of two atoms of hydrogen, as dioxy-acid, dioxybenzene, C₆H₄(OH)₂ (benzene being C₆H₆).
