[f. epi- + Gr. λιµνίον, dim. of λίµνη lake.]
The upper, uniformly warm layer of water in a stratified lake: cf. hypolimnion. Hence epilimˈnetic [cf. Gr. λιµνήτης living in marshes], epiˈlimnial adjs., situated in or relating to the epilimnion.
