Brit. |fɪˈnastərʌɪd|, U.S. |fəˈnæstəˌraɪd| [‹ a first element of unknown origin + ster- (in steroid n.) + -ide suffix.] A drug that inhibits the conversion of testosterone to the more potent dihydrotesterone in the human prostate gland and hair follicles, used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and male-pattern baldness. Chemical name: N-tert-butyl-3-oxo-4-aza-5α-androst-1-ene-17β-carbamate.
