1. Baseball. Either of the two boundary lines extending from the back of home plate in the direction of first and third bases, upon crossing which a hit becomes foul.

2. A type of boundary line in various sports; (in later use) spec. (chiefly Bowling and Athletics) a line that competitors may not cross, such a crossing constituting a foul.
