■ fundamental

这个形容词，连同它的派生副词 fundamentally，同 basic 和 basically 一样，有两个不完全相同的含义，一个是比较弱的“基本”（中文“基本上”也可以是弱意的“大体上”、“不完全”的意思）。

• She seems hard but fundamentally she's good hearted.她的样子看起来很严峻，但是基本上她的心地还是和善的。

另一个意思是“根本”（甚至是“彻底”），是比较强的。

• Freedom of speech is fundamental to democracy.言论自由是民主的根本。

需要从上下文和语境来辨明其不同含义。

由于 fundamental 和 basic 有时候有这样的歧义，所以中文强意的“根本”译英文时往往不用这两个形容词或其派生副词，而改用别的说法，例如：

• “根本解决问题”译作 tackle the problem at the root
• “根本原因”译作 root cause
• “根本问题”译作 root problem
• “根本变化”译作 radical change
• “根本分歧”译作 essential differences
• “根本原则”译作 cardinal principle
• “根本不同”译作 radically/entirely/totally different
• “根本对立的学说”译作 doctrines diametrally opposite to each other
• “根本改变该地区的落后面貌”译作 thoroughly overcome the backwardness of the region
• “根本否认”译作 flatly deny
• “根本拒绝”译作 reject outright。

如果“根本”用于强调否定，就更不要用 fundamental, basic 之类的形容词或副词（反而会减弱语气）。

• I've never made such remarks.我根本没有说过这样的话。
• I don't know him at all.我根本不认识他。
