[f. indo-² + oxyl.]
A brownish oil, C₈H₇NO, isomeric with oxindole, formed, with evolution of carbonic acid gas, when indoxylic acid is heated above its melting point; it is converted by oxidation into indigo-blue.
Hence indoˈxylic a., in i. acid, C₉H₇NO₃, a white crystalline precipitate, slightly soluble in water, and converted by air or oxidizing agents into indigo-blue: its salts are inˈdoxylates.
