A kind of imperfection in a crystal lattice, characterized by an interstitial atom able to displace an atom from an adjacent lattice position so that it becomes the interstitial in its turn, able to displace another atom.

III. 361/1 The lattice imperfection which is the inverse counterpart of a lattice vacancy is an interstitial atom which moves by jumping into a normal lattice site and forces the atom that is there into a neighboring interstitial site...
