a. An enzyme found in the human pancreas and elsewhere in the body, which releases kallidin from a plasma precursor and has been used therapeutically as a vasodilator and hypotensive agent.
1930Chem. Abstr. XXIV. 4541 The name callicrein, taken from a Greek synonym for pancreas, is proposed for this circulatory hormone. 1956Robson & Keele Recent Adv. Pharmacol.
