[Hindi.] The balsam pear or bitter gourd, Momordica charantia, a climbing plant of the family Cucurbitaceæ, native to south-east Asia and tropical Africa, and cultivated in India for its edible, rough-skinned, yellow or white fruit, which is lemon-shaped and may be as much as eight inches long.
