XII. 131/1 The insect most dreaded is the ‘langosta’ or ‘chapulin’, which at intervals afflicts the entire country, vast columns passing from one end to the other, darkening the air, and destroying every green thing in their course. 1909Cent. Dict. Suppl., Langosta, any injurious locust or grasshopper: so called in Spanish America and, to some extent, in the southwestern United States.
2. A lobster, esp. the spiny lobster, Palinurus vulgaris (= crayfish n. 3 b).
