An optically active tertiary alcohol, (CH3)2C:CH·CH2·CH2·C(CH3)OH·CH:CH2, found in linaloe oil and used in perfumery: the d-isomer is coriandrol and the l-isomer also occurs in the oils of rose, bergamot, lavender, and thyme.
1891Jrnl. Chem. Soc. LX. i. 540 Linaloe oil appears to be a mixture of several compounds... The principal constituent which is termed linaloöl, boils at about 195–190° [sic]. 1922Jrnl. Amer. Chem. Soc. XLIV. 2966 The odorous constituents of the peach consist chiefly of esters of the aliphatic terpene alcohol linalool. 1951P. Z. Bedoukian Perfumery Synthetics & Isolates 292 Commercial linalool is obtained from several sources, principally from oil of bois de rose, linaloe, shiu and coriander... Hence ˈlinalyl, the radical C10H17—present in ethers and esters of linalool.
