The name of Gabriel Lippmann (1845–1921), French physicist, used attrib. with reference to a method of colour photography invented by him in which colours are produced by interference effects in an emulsion containing very fine silver halide particles.
1902Westm. Gaz. 26 Sept. 4/2 Among all experts in this branch of photography it is agreed that the Lippmann interference process is the only one which gives all the colours of Nature in a direct manner, but these experts are unfortunately also agreed that it is an exceedingly difficult process to work. 1908Astrophysical Jrnl.
