markland Sc.|ˈmɑːklənd| [f. mark n.2 + land.] A division of land, originally of the annual value of a mark; = mark n.2 As ‘a markland’ and ‘a mark (of) land’ were equivalent, it is often difficult to determine whether in the early examples the combination is a compound or a syntactical collocation.
