[ad. mod.L. Mastigopoda neut. pl. (lit. ‘whip-footed’ animals), f. Gr. µαστῑγ-, µάστιξ whip + ποδ-, πούς foot.]
A. n. Huxley's name for a protozoan furnished with cilia or flagella.
B. adj. Furnished with cilia or flagella, or both (Cent. Dict. 1890).
1875Huxley in Encycl. Brit. II. 50/1 The myxopod..gives rise by division to bodies provided with long flagelliform cilia..which may be termed mastigopods.1877― Anat. Inv.
