这个单词如果联系到人，指的是已经死去的人。

• in memory of Prof. Smith纪念史密斯教授
• our dear mother of blessed memory我们深切怀念的亲爱的先母。

尤其要注意的是：memory 无论后面 of + 某人，或是前面加 his, her 之类，都是被怀念的对象。

• His memory will live on.大家会一直怀念他。
• A monument was erected to his memory.竖起了一座纪念碑来纪念他。
• We all have reason to be proud of them and treasure their memory.我们大家都有理由把他们引以为荣，纪念他们。
• Through this scholarship in his memory, I know he is smiling, just knowing that other students will be helped to realize their dreams.我知道，他在天之灵如果知道了，别的一些学生通过这项为纪念他而设立的奖学金，就能得到帮助，去实现自己的梦想，他也会开颜微笑的。
• And his (= my father's) memory infused me, at a younger age than most, with a sense of my mortality. (Bill Clinton, My Life)对他的怀念，使得我比许多别的人都更早地对自己最终总是要死的有所感受。

但是如果前面有 his, her 之类，后面又有 of，则可以是“某人对某人的回忆”，也可以指仍然活着的人。

• He was being harsh in his memory of his ex-wife.他回忆起前妻，就耿耿于怀。

另外，有时候涉及已故的人的 memory 在中译文中放进去有点勉强，翻译时可以考虑省略。
