A colourless oil obtained by the distillation of sugar or starch with quicklime.
1838T. Thomson Chem. Org. Bodies 364 M. Fremy discovered that when 1 part of sugar is intimately mixed with 8 parts of unslacked lime, and distilled, the product consists of two liquids, one of which is acetone, and to the other he has given the name of metacetone.1844Fownes Chem. 409.
