2. [Linnæus 1741, in Acta Soc. Reg. Scient. Upsaliensis 82.] An annual or perennial herb of the large genus so called, belonging to the family Scrophulariaceæ and widely distributed in America, Asia, and Africa, esp. Mimulus luteus, the monkey-flower, a yellow-flowered perennial, native to western North America but naturalized elsewhere.
M. moschatus is commonly known as the musk plant.
