ˈmoon-blind, a.

1. Of horses: Suffering from ‘moon-eye’; moon-eyed. Also used n. as the name of the disease.
1668Phil. Trans. III. 731, I had a very narrow escape from an excellent Horse which had that only defect, which they call Moon-blind. 1689O. 3. Suffering from blindness brought on by sleeping exposed to the moon's rays. Also used as n. (see quot. 1877).
1830Marryat King's Own xxii, It would be as well..to request the officer of the watch not to permit the men to sleep on the upper deck. We shall have many of them moon-blind. 1846S. Lee Afr. Wanderers xviii. (1854) 314 Soldiers who have been moon-blind for life. 1877R. I. Dodge Plains Gt. West v. 67 There is said to be [a] plains malady, which, however, I cannot vouch for. It is called ‘moon-blind’. The idea is that the full rays of the moon affect the eyes of a man sleeping exposed to them, so that he cannot see at night.
Hence ˈmoon-blindness.
