1) 作为具体名词，是“办公室”，可以按照情况加冠词。作为抽象名词，则是“职务”，不加任何冠词。

• to be in office 或 to hold office正在任职
• to take office就职
• to resign office辞职
• to leave office离职
• to run for office竞选公职
• to seek office谋职
• two men in high office两名高级官员。

但是可以说 the office of president 总统职位（注意：president 前无冠词，如果说 the office of the president，则是“总统的办公室”）。

2) 由于 office 的语源来自拉丁文的 officium，即 opus（办事）+ facere（做）+ 名词词尾 -ium，在稍为古旧一点的英语，可以指一件普普通通的事务（不一定是什么正式的“公职”，甚至不是经常性的“私职”）。

good offices（必须用复数，good 可省略）是“从中帮忙沟通”、“斡旋”。
