1) 通常 one of 的意义很简单也很清楚，就是“…之一”。但是“…之一”作为理解是可以的，作为翻译则往往不顺口，不一定可以用来“以不变应万变”，例如：

• She is one of the best Chinese sopranos.

与其译为“她是中国最好的女高音之一”，就不如译为“她是中国女高音的佼佼者”。

• The President is one of the most powerful men in the country.

与其译为“总统是国内权力最大的人之一”，就不如译为“总统是国内权力数一数二大的人”。

• He lapsed into one of his coughing spells.

与其译为“他又陷进他的咳嗽发作之一中”，就不如译为“他又一次咳嗽发作了”。

• One of her fits of dizziness came on suddenly.

与其译为“她的发晕之一忽然来临了”，就不如译为“她又一次眩晕起来”。

• She claimed not to remember anything that occurred while she was in one of her trances.她声称，她又一次昏迷期间发生了什么事，全都记不起来了。
• It was one of those moments when they found him trying to jump into the limelight.凡是遇到像这次这样的时刻，他们总是看到他想方设法要出风头。

2) one of 有时候也不一定就是“…之一”。one 可以不是指 of 后面的名词，而是代替前面出现过的另一个名词。

• The big house in Belgravia was let, and Charles installed himself in a smaller establishment in Kensington, more suitable to a young bachelor. There he was looked after by a manservant, a cook and two maids, a staff of almost eccentric modesty for one (= a younger bachelor) of his connections and wealth (= who had such connections and wealth). (John Fowles, The French Lieutenant's Woman, Chapter 3)查尔斯将贝尔格拉瓦街的大宅子出租，自己住到肯星顿街一座不大的寓所里。一个年轻的单身汉住这样的寓所倒更合适些。伺候他的只有一名男仆、一名厨子和两名侍女。有他那样的社会关系和巨大财富的人，使用如此少的仆人未免过于寒酸。
