Mod.L. oolithus occurs in this sense in 1721 (F. E. Brückmann Specimen Physicum Exhibens Historiam Naturalem Oolithi seu Ovariorum Piscium et Concharum in Saxa Mutatorum 5) and may be the source of both this word and oolite (= ad. F. oölithe).]
