† ˈortive, a. Obs. [ad. L. ortīv-us pertaining to rising, f. ortus rising, rise. So F. ortive (1558 in Hatz.-Darm., 1762 in Dict. Acad.).] 1. Astron. Rising; pertaining to the rising of a heavenly body.
