[f. mod.L. family name Passalidæ, f. the generic name Passalus (J. C. Fabricius Entomologia Systematica (1792) I. ii. 240), f. Gr. πάσσαλος peg, in allusion to the shape of the insect: see -id3.]
Belonging to the family Passalidæ, which includes black or dark brown beetles with slightly flattened bodies, found in decaying wood in warm forest regions. Also as n., a beetle belonging to this family.
