[Prob. ad. F. palmette (see palmette), formerly a conventional ornament on window cornices.]
A valance or horizontal strip of curtain, wood or other material, fitted across the top of a door or window, usu. to conceal curtain fittings. Hence ˈpelmeted a., fitted with a pelmet.
