释义 penacute, a. (n.) Heb. and Gr. Gram.|piːnəˈkjuːt|
[f. L. pēne (more correctly pæne) ‘almost, nearly’, before a vowel pēn + acute. In this instance formed directly after penultimate.]
Having an acute accent on the penultimate syllable; paroxytone. b. n. A word so accented. Hence penaˈcute v. trans., to accent acutely on the penultimate syllable.
1751Wesley Wks. (1872) XIV. 80 If [a word has an acute] on the last [syllable] but one, [it is termed] a penacute.1764W. Primatt Accentus redivivi 111 The Dorians penacuted verbs ending ον,..that is, provided they were third persons plural.1874A. B. Davidson Heb. Gram. vii. 15 note, In continuous discourse small words or words penacute are often attracted to the end of preceding ones.
