[f. petty a. + ? chap n.2 or n.3 Locally used in Yorkshire and Lancashire: a specimen of the bird was sent from Sheffield to Willughby c 1670, under this name, which thus entered into ornithological nomenclature; but app. never in general Eng. use, and still chiefly a book-name.]
A name of the Garden Warbler (Sylvia hortensis). Also applied to other species of warblers, as lesser pettichaps, the chiff-chaff (Phylloscopus rufus); dial. the long-tailed titmouse (rare).
