The indefinite nature of the term has led to its application frequently to substances that are not compounds of fatty acids at all. And it is indeed impossible to say what kind of substances should be regarded as phosphatides... In these pages, therefore, for the compounds of fatty acids containing phosphorus and nitrogen the term phospholipine will..be used. 1915Jrnl. Biol. Chem. Chem. iii. 55 The phosphatides (also called phospholipins) are present in every animal and vegetable cell and are especially abundant in the brain, heart, muscles, liver, and eggs. On hydrolysis these substances yield fatty acids, a nitrogenous base, phosphoric acid, and usually glycerol. 1948New Biol.
