1. = phosphorescent a.
1777Pennant Zool. (ed. 4) IV. 50 Their phosphorous quality is well known; nor was it overlooked by the antients. 1883C. F. Holder in Harper's Mag. Jan. 185/2 MM. Edoux and Soulezet collected some of the phosphorous substance.
2. Chem. Abounding in phosphorus; spec. applied to compounds into which phosphorus enters in its lower valency (trivalent), as opp. to phosphoric; esp. in phosphorous acid = trihydrogen phosphite, H3PO3 = P(OH)3, obtained from phosphorus, usually in the form of a thick uncrystallizable syrup, but also in crystalline form.
phosphorous anhydride = phosphorus trioxide, P2O3, a white non-crystalline powder, produced by the slow combustion of phosphorus in the air; phosphorous chloride = p. trichloride, PCl3, a colourless strongly fuming liquid.
