pinosylvin Biol.|paɪnəʊˈsɪlvɪn| Formerly also -sylvine. [a. G. pinosylvin (H. Erdtman 1939, in Naturwiss. XXVII. 130), f. mod.L. Pinus sylvestris, taxonomic name of Scots pine (f. L. pīnus pine n.2 + syl-, silvestris of a wood (f. silva a wood)): see -in1.] a. A colourless, toxic, crystalline compound, 3,5-dihydroxystilbene, C14H12O2, which occurs in the heartwood of the Scots pine, where it confers resistance to fungal and insect attack. b. Any of the related antifungal compounds that occur in pines.
