The formation of smaller grains within the grains of a metal as a result of the migration of dislocations following deformation and annealing.

Strength of Solids, 1947 137 The x-ray and microscopical results together lead to an interpretation as follows: the deformation leads to elastic bending of glide lamellae; when the crystal is annealed, the lamellae undergo ‘polygonization’. 1949― in Jrnl. Inst. Metals LXXVI. 136 It is suggested that the process be named polygonization, to distinguish it from other forms of recrystallization. The name derives from the fact that the crystallographic direction which coincides with the wire axis, while bent along an arc before annealing, becomes part of a polygon afterwards. 1950Engineering 5 May 499/3 Polygonisation could be obtained in hexagonal metals only after plastic bending and not after deformation in tension. 1957D.
