A colourless, crystalline, synthetic steroid, C₂₁H₂₆O₅, resembling cortisone but possessing greater glucocorticoid activity, which is used as an anti-inflammatory agent and to depress immune responses, esp. in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
