prednisone Pharm.|ˈprɛdnɪsəʊn| [Prob. f. pregnadiene (f. pregnane + diene) + -isone, after cortisone.] A colourless, crystalline, synthetic steroid, C21H26O5, resembling cortisone but possessing greater glucocorticoid activity, which is used as an anti-inflammatory agent and to depress immune responses, esp. in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
