[f. proton + -ate3.]
a. trans. To transfer a proton to (a molecule, group, atom, etc.), a co-ordinate bond being formed to the proton.
b. intr. To receive a proton in this way. So ˈprotonated ppl. a., having received a proton; bonded to an additional proton; ˈprotonating vbl. n.
As used by Pitzer (quot. 1945), protonated had a slightly different, more restricted sense, being applied to the two bonds (each with a bridging hydrogen atom) which link the boron atoms in the electron-deficient compound diborane, B2H6.
