[Sp., lit. ‘rancid, mature’, f. L. rancidus.]
A. adj. Of wines: having the distinctive bouquet, nutty flavour, or tawny colouring characteristic of certain well-matured, fortified, or dessert wines.
B. ellipt. as n. A wine of this kind.
1851C. Redding Hist. Mod. Wines (ed. 3) vi. 151 Good Grenache wine is..ten or twelve years attaining full perfection. It then takes the designation of rancio, or rusty, or, as some call it, tawny. 1939B. Collier Catalan France viii. 200 With dessert we drank an excellent Rancio from the neighborhood of Barcelona.
