[a. F. razzia, ad. Algerian Arab. ghāzīah, var. Arab. ghazwah, ghazāh war, battle, military expedition, raid against infidels, f. ghasw to make war. Cf. Pg. gazia, gaziva, from the same source.
The initial r of the French form represents a pron. of the Ar. {ayindotab} approaching to a guttural r (ghr), also indicated in the form ghrazzie formerly used by some English writers:—1821 Capt. Lyon Trav. N. Africa vi. 262 None but the Bedouins appear to approve of these ghrazzies.1826Denham Trav. 75 These people could lead 3000 men into action, for his ghrazzie was to consist of that number.
