Reiter, n.2 Path.|ˈraɪtə(r)|
The name of Hans Reiter (1881–1969), German bacteriologist, used in the possessive to denote a disease or syndrome first described by him in 1916 (Deutsche Med. Wochenschr. 14 Dec. 1535) which is characterized by arthritis, conjunctivitis, and urethritis, typically affects young men, and is usually caused by bacteria of the genus Chlamydia.

(ed. 7) 859/2 Reiter's disease, a fever of a more or less remittent type, lasting about seventeen days, accompanied with pains in the joints, conjunctivitis, iritis, cystitis, and enlargement of the spleen; it has been observed in the tropics, but its causation is unknown. 1946Jrnl.
