A ridge left unploughed between two furrows, esp. in the process of raftering or ribbing. Also attrib. or Comb.
1523Fitzherb. Husb. §4 A reste-balke is where the plough byteth at the poynte of the culture and share, and cutteth not the ground cleane to the forowe, that was plowed laste before, but leaueth a lyttell rydge standynge betwene. 1794A. Young in Driver Gen. View Agric. Hants. 68 Also raftering the land, which is a sort of rest baulk ploughing. 1850Jrnl. R. Agric. Soc. Hence ˈrest-balk v. trans., to plough (land) with rest-balks; to rib or rafter.
