A local name in part of the Soviet Union for the guinea-worm (Dracunculus medinensis), a common parasite of man and other mammals, and the disease which it produces.
1834A. Burnes Trav. Bokhara II. 180 Among the diseases of Bokhara, the most distressing is the guinea-worm, or Dracunculus, here called ‘rishtu’: it is confined to the city. The inhabitants believe that the disease arises from drinking the water of the cisterns in summer, when they become fetid and infested with animalculæ. 1885H. Lansdell Russ.
