A character in The Good Soldier Schweik by Jaroslav Hašek (1883–1923), Czech writer, pictured as an unlucky and simple-minded but resourceful little man oppressed by higher authorities; a person of this type. Hence Schweik v. intr., to behave in the deferential, crafty manner of Schweik; ˈSchweikism, behaviour characteristic of a Schweik; ˈSchweikist a., typical of a Schweik.
