An oligonucleotide composed of four (unspecified) nucleotides; orig., one composed of one each of four different bases and formerly thought to constitute the nucleic acid molecule (so tetranucleotide hypothesis, tetranucleotide theory).

Because these bases were found to be present in the form of nucleotides (sugar-phosphate + base) the molecule was called a tetranucleotide. |
