谈话双方都共同心照的一个特定城市，不用任何冠词。

• to go into town进城
• in town在城里
• They live out of town.他们住在城外。
• She is out of town at the moment.她目前在外地。
• The next day the news was all over town.次日，消息传遍了全市。

但是有些成语中，town 前面加上定冠词 the。

• to go out on the town 或 to have a night on the town 或 to paint the town red上街去过夜生活。

此外，如果注意力不是放在空间位置上，也要加上定冠词或不定冠词。

• in the fields on the other side of town (Jeffrey Archer, The Fourth Estate, p.30)在镇另一端的田野上[空间位置，不要 the]
• ... she was considered not only the most beautiful, but also the brightest girl in the town. (ibid.)她被公认为该镇不但最美丽而且最聪明的姑娘 [不是空间位置，要 the]。
