1) 这个形容词尽管在词义上有“较高”的意思，但是在语法上不能算作比较级，因为第一，它不能用作表语（不能说*... is upper than...），只能放在定指名词前面作定语。第二，它这个“较高”的意义，只能相对于仅有的一两个“较低”的现成对象（而且往往是成双的事物的另一件，或是同质的事物），不能扩大比较范围。这两个特点，在下列例子中都可以看得很明显。

• the upper lip上唇
• the upper jaw上颚
• notes in the upper register高音部乐谱
• the upper Amazon亚马逊河上游
• upper Georgia乔治亚州北部
• upper freshmen一年级下学期学生
• the upper circle of society上流社会
• the upper case大写字母。

与之相对应，lower 的例子有。

• lower plants低等植物
• the lower lip下唇
• the lower part of the body下半身
• Lower House 或 Lower Chamber（英国的“下议院”House of Commons或美国的“众议院” House of Representatives）。
