Just 作为“只不过”解，同 only 在意义上和用法上有同有异。Only 有比较强烈的“数量上的对外排他性”（见 alone 与 only 条），而 just 则偏重于“质量上的对内满足”。

• Assuming half of all video game consoles are left on all the times, Americans would save $1 billion a year if we just turned them off when we're not using them. (The Sunday Gazette, USA Weekend, May 31, 2009, p.7)假设所有的电子游戏机全部时间都是接通电流的，那么，只消不使用时就关掉，美国人一年就可以节省共十亿美元。

如果 just 改为 only，意思就变成“原先一直是关着的，现在改为只在不用时关掉，用时千万不可以关掉”。

• Spelling mistakes are often just (*only) the result of haste.拼写错误往往只不过是由于匆忙。
• Just(*only) the interest on that would be enough.单单这笔钱的利息，就够用了。
• ... the object that people call the universe, vast though it is, may be just (*only) one of an indefinite number of similar structures,... (The Economist, Aug. 15, 2009, p.12)…人们称为宇宙的这个东西，尽管浩瀚庞大，但也只不过是无限数目的类似结构当中的一个而已，…

这里用 just而不用 only，是因为着重点在“这一个”本身的局限性（“质”），而不在它对于外界的“排他性”（“量”只有一个的单独性）。
