但是，refute 有时候也可以是第二类动词，表示“反驳”而不一定是“驳倒”。

refute 的同义词 rebut，则主要是第二类动词，表示“反驳”。

• He spent most of his speech rebutting criticisms of his foreign policy.他的演说，大部分用来反驳那些对他的对外政策的批评。

即使是用于一般或完成时态，rebut 也主要是“反驳”而不是“驳倒”。

• Once an employer has rebutted the charge of disparate impact discrimination, the burden is on the plaintiff to rebut the rebuttal. (Michael Yates, Power on the Job: The Legal Rights of Working People, p.25)一旦雇主反驳了有关滥施歧视的指控，对他的反驳进行反驳的责任就落在原告身上。

但是 rebut 有时候也用作第四类动词，表示“驳倒”，例如美国法院的判决书中常有 rebut the assumption that... 的说法，意思就是“推翻了认为…的假设”。refute 的另一个同义词 retort，在“体”上属于第四类，但意义只是“（短促地）反驳一下”，并不表示“驳倒”，而且它是个不及物动词，没有直接宾语，所以更谈不上“驳倒”什么。
